In The Room March 2026 Theme: Emergency / Notfall

For one day each year, about 30 people - who have never been together in one room - gather in a living room and share things they have made.

From 14:30 til 21:00 we saw films, heard excerpts from books, listened to poems, songs, tracks, ideas: creations made by people who were in the room. We don’t all know each other. New people come every time. We wrote, created and brought works on this year’s theme of emergency.

Works touched upon death up close and afar, what emergency is and isn’t, prepping for the apocalypse, dreaming up left-wing strong women, the expulsion of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenian people, missing children, loss of love, needing the toilet, change within after an emergency, mysterious arch constructions, the dark and light in our lives as well as instrumental and sound tracks.

I keep seeing the mechanism of an emergency at work in the world. We move from a “normal” situation where a certain set of complex rules apply. Then you need to sense and feel that those rules don’t apply anymore because an acute and serious situation is happening. In English, it emerges. Entirely opposite rules to those you usually live by might govern in an emergency. Time and action passes. Without fully understanding how, you’re back in the world of normal rules. The emergency is over. Anyway, this is our theme this year.

In The Room March 2025 Theme: Body /Bodies/ Körper

In The Room - 8 March 2025 - Theme: Body / Bodies

We consume culture - films, music, theatre, comedy, writing - made by strangers who we’ll most likely never meet or truly know every single day. At this event, we only hear creations by people who are In The Room. People start showing up at 13:00, chat in the kitchen, eat soup. When it’s time, we shepherd everyone into the living room, scribble the name of their poem, film or reading down on a door-sized running order and make our way together for the next 5 or 6 hours.

Bedsheets block the living room window so the projector is visible. Find a gap to sit and your mind is led into a different world again and again by each interpretation of the event’s theme. This year it’s Body / Bodies.

In The Room 2024 Theme: Berlin

For one day only, we turn off Spotify, Netflix and the radio where you can access strangers’ cultural creations. Instead, we gather and consume writing, poetry, films and songs only by people who are In The Room.

Over 5 or 6 hours we move from one creation to the next on the theme of Berlin.

In The Room Jan 2023 Theme: Death

In The Room 2023 Theme: Death

The people around us are making things. I want to hear them, rather than just listening to strangers’ music and watching their films. That’s what In The Room is all about: for one day, we hear things made by people who are In The Room.

Until now, we’ve gathered and heard anything someone wants to bring. But by chance, Ben and I both had death relates pieces we’d made. So In The Room has its first theme. Death.

In The Room Jan 2020

Famous people are making stuff; that we know. But it turns out the people you know actually create enough culture to fill a whole day’s worth of music, readings and stuff to enjoy.

In The Room is getting anyone who wants to to come to your living room and listen to stuff made by people who are In The Room.
